Minimally invasive hip replacement

Hip replacement surgery, total hip arthroplasty (or hip replacement) has become one of the most common surgical techniques in everyday orthopedic surgery.

Until a few years ago, the conventional technique for any approach was to make a 15cm + incision, which was tremendously aggressive in terms of muscles and fascial bands.

Minimally invasive techniques for hip replacement are not just a question of improved esthetics, but are less aggressive for the soft tissue around the joint, which means less blood loss and a more rapid recovery, a less painful postoperative phase and a shorter hospital stay.

A procedure is considered minimally invasive when the incision is 10 cm or less, or there two incisions, the anterior of 5 cm and the lateral of 2.5 – 5 cm.

At Hospiten Rambla we have been carrying out minimally invasive hip replacement (10 cm or less incision) since January 2005, except in those cases where the procedure is not recommended, which are obese or very muscular patients, prosthesis review or hip dysplasia.
