Lipoedema

What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema, also known as "painful fat syndrome," is a chronic condition that primarily affects women. It is characterised by an abnormal accumulation of fat cells, most commonly in the lower body, such as the hips, thighs, and buttocks. However other body parts like abdomen , back or chin can also be affected by Lipoedema Unlike regular weight gain, the fat distribution in lipedema is often disproportionate and resistant to traditional diet and exercise.

Individuals with lipoedema typically experience pain, tenderness, and increased sensitivity in the affected areas. The condition can also lead to bruising, swelling, and a "column-like" appearance of the legs. Over time, untreated lipedema can progress, causing mobility issues and emotional distress due to body image concerns.

At our practice, we understand the challenges faced by individuals with lipedema. Our compassionate plastic surgeon, Dr. Oliver Doebler specialises in lipoedema treatment options to help improve both physical and emotional well-being. 10 Signs of having a Lipoedema:

Here are 10 signs that may indicate the presence of lipedema:

  1. Disproportionate fat distribution: Lipoedema often causes an abnormal accumulation of fat cells, typically in the lower body, while the upper body remains relatively slim.
  2. Bilateral symmetrical pattern: Lipoedema tends to affect both sides of the body equally, with a mirrored distribution of fat in the hips, thighs, and buttocks.
  3. Fat that is resistant to diet and exercise: Despite efforts to lose weight through healthy lifestyle choices, the fat in lipedema-affected areas remains stubborn and difficult to reduce.
  4. Pain or tenderness: Lipoedema can cause pain, tenderness, and increased sensitivity in the affected areas, often described as aching or soreness.
  5. Easy bruising: Individuals with lipoedema may bruise easily, even with minimal impact or pressure on the skin.
  6. Swelling: Lipoedema can lead to swelling or edema in the affected limbs, especially at the end of the day or after prolonged periods of standing or sitting.
  7. "Column-like" appearance: Over time, untreated lipedema may cause the legs to take on a column-like or "tree trunk" appearance due to the accumulation of excess fat.
  8. Family history: Lipoedema can have a genetic component, so if other family members have been diagnosed with the condition, there may be an increased likelihood of having it as well.
  9. Sensitivity to touch: Individuals with lipoedema may experience heightened sensitivity to touch or pressure in the affected areas
  10. Emotional impact: Lipoedema can have a significant emotional impact, leading to body image concerns, decreased self-esteem, and reduced quality of life.

If you recognize several of these signs in yourself, it is important to consult with a medical professional who specialises in lipedema for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment options.
