Without fear of the menopause

Posted on 28-07-2017

For many women (and many men), the menopause is still a difficult subject to talk about. It is a time in a woman’s life when she stops menstruating and is no longer fertile. It is quite common for this to happen around 50 years of age, although the body may stop producing estrogen (steroid sex hormones) prematurely, at any time after 35 years of age.

The menopause is said to be complete when there has been no menstruation for a year. The symptoms of menopause vary from woman to woman. Among these are: hot flushes, sweating, fatigue, tiredness, headaches, depression, insomnia, irritability, weight gain, vaginal dryness, loss of libido, joint pain and osteoporosis.

The menopause is a phase in a woman’s life that should not cause fear, but does require some care. The concept of preventing the menopause refers to preparing for it in the best way possible. Eating well, physical exercise, good sleep habits and good lifestyle may all help to get through this period.

There are two types of treatment: Hormone Replacement Treatment (HRT) and Non-Hormonal Treatment or Phytotherapy (the use of herbs). It is important to consult your gynecologist to make the right diagnosis and receive the most appropriate treatment for the patient’s needs and preferences. The Gynecology and Obstetrics Service at Hospiten Los Cabos offers the diagnostic tests needed to prescribe the right treatment for each patient.
