What is a cookie?
It is a file that is downloaded to your computer or other device when you access certain web pages that collect information about your browsing on that website. In some cases cookies are necessary to facilitate navigation and allow storing and retrieving information about the browsing habits of a user or their equipment, among other things and, depending on the information they contain and the way you use your computer, can be used to recognize the user.
Types of cookies
Depending on the entity that manages them:
- Own Cookies: are those that are sent to the User's terminal equipment from a computer or domain managed by the editor itself and from which the service requested by the User is provided.
- Third-party cookies: are those that are sent to the User's terminal equipment from a computer or domain that is not managed by the editor, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through cookies.
Types of third-party cookies:
- Load-balancing cookies: they are used to collect data that help regulate, divide and manage server congestion. They are considered necessary for communication over the network. They only identify a server, therefore, they do not contain personal data.
- Cookies to customize the user interface: they are used, among others, to indicate the preferred language or content format. They do not require any particular identifier, therefore, they will not constitute personal information.
Depending on how long the cookie remains active on the computer:
- Session cookies: these are temporary cookies that remain in the cookie file of your browser until you leave the website, so none is recorded on the user's hard drive. The information obtained through these cookies is used to analyze web traffic patterns. Ultimately, this allows us to provide a better experience to improve the content and facilitate its use.
- Persistent cookies: these are stored on the hard drive and our website reads them each time the user makes a new visit. A permanent cookie can be accessed and treated for a period defined by the person responsible for the cookie, after that date it will stop working.
According to its purpose:
- Technical cookies: allow the user to navigate through a website, platform or application and the use of the different options or services that exist in it.
- Personalization Cookies: These allow the user to access the service with some general characteristics predefined according to a series of criteria in the user's terminal such as, for example, the language, the type of browser through which the user accesses the service, the regional configuration from where the user accesses the service, etc.
- Analysis cookies: These cookies allow the party responsible for them to monitor and analyze the behavior of the users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookies is used in the measurement of the activity of the websites, application or platform and for the elaboration of browsing profiles of the users of such sites, applications and platforms, in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of the data of use made by the users of the service.
- Advertising Cookies: These allow the management, in the most effective way possible, of the advertising spaces that, where appropriate, the publisher has included on a website, application or platform from which it provides the requested service based on criteria such as the edited content or the frequency at which the ads are displayed.
- Behavioraladvertising cookies: These cookies store information on user behavior obtained through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows the development of a specific profile to display advertising based on the same.
