On the occasion of European Sexual Health Day, the healthcare group seeks to drive home to the public the importance of being informed and taking care of oneself to enjoy healthy sexuality.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, February 14 2017: Specialist in Urology and Andrology with Hospiten, Dr. Guillermo Conde, says that only two out of ten people affected by sexual dysfunction consult a doctor, although the percentage has risen slightly in recent years. Embarrassment or the false belief that one should give up on their sexuality after a certain age are some of the reasons patients do not see a specialist.
Coinciding with European Sexual Health Day, this Tuesday, February 14, the Hospiten Group stresses the importance of having regular checks with the urologist to know what is going on with one’s body and to take the necessary care of oneself to enjoy healthy sexuality.
The main problems dealt with in an andrology consultation in men are erectile dysfunction and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Erectile dysfunction affects around 18% of men, which increases to 30% in the 60-to-70 year age group. It is an excellent indicator of overall health in a man as it is associated to higher risk of heart disease, in addition to affecting the patient’s self-confidence, causing stress and low self-esteem.
Another problem involves STDs, among which are chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis, the number of cases of which have increased alarmingly in recent years in the Canary Islands, particularly among younger people, who actually have excellent access to information about contraceptives, but make little use of them. So, accurate medical information and sexual education are basic to avoiding the consequences of these diseases.
“An active, healthy sex life has an effect on a person’s life. And, particularly for the male, check-ups by a urologist are vital to detecting, diagnosing and preventing disease. In the case of sexual health problems, consulting a doctor in time can prevent more serious diseases in the long term or the breaking up of a couple”, adds Dr.Conde.
Sexual and reproductive health forms an essential part of a person’s life today and in the future. Therefore, access to accurate information and to medical professionals who can advise, educate and teach young people is very important to encourage healthy lifestyles and necessary preventive measures.
