Posted on 13-11-2012

The presentation of "The virtue of caring. Ethics for healthcare professionals" took place last week at the Hospiten Estepona facilities, at the hands of Liliana Torres Diaz, Director of the SARquavitae Azalea Care Home in Nueva Andalucia, and member of the group’s ethics committee.

The staff at Hospiten Estepona attended the presentation whose aim was to discuss the attitudes and qualities needed to carry out with excellence the vital task of caring for people who are dependent and/or in a vulnerable position.

Caring for those who are dependent undoubtedly involves ethics. Thus, the importance of taking into consideration the qualities healthcare professional should have, of taking into account the vulnerability of those we are caring for and appropriate end-of-life care.

The book defines these qualities as an ethical code setting the standard to be reached and what is acceptable in accordance with basic ethical principles. They define good practice and so are of great practical use, particularly in the care of people.

These virtues and their definitions are not inflexible like other relevant ethical and cultural factors they evolve and change in significance depending on the social changes of the moment. Therefore, it is of interest to analyze what qualities are currently valued by those in the care of social-healthcare professionals, their families and caregivers.

The project of the book came into being at the head office of the SARquavitae Healthcare Ethics Committee as an educational tool, but also as a means to sensitize society. On the one hand, educating professionals in applied ethics is one of the aims of the SARquavitae HEC and is of great relevance considering the impact it has on improving the quality of care. On the other hand, engaging in debates on such significant subjects responds to the committee’s interest in making professionals and the general public more aware of the importance of these virtues in current practice and in future needs.

Initiatives like these reflect the commitment the Hospiten Group has to supporting health care education among its staff.
