Santa Cruz de Tenerife, August 7, 2020: In summer there is a marked increase in visits to the doctor due to vaginal candidiasis, or thrush – a gynecological infection which can be prevented by altering simple habits like changing your wet swimsuit for a dry one after bathing in the sea or pool, as recommended by Hospiten Rambla Obstetrician-Gynecologist, Dr. Rosendo Galvan.
Stinging, internal and external burning sensation, as well as thicker white discharge are the main symptoms of the condition. If you have any of these symptoms, you should see a specialist for a correct diagnosis and corresponding treatment.
There are numerous possible causes of this yeast infection that is more common in women during the summer months. Wearing a wet swimsuit in summer, as mentioned above, is one of the causes, but it is not the only thing that can cause candidiasis. Dr. Galvan explains that thrush can also be caused by using tampons and synthetic material next to the skin, such as panty liners.
Among other recommendations Dr. Galvan makes is drying your swimsuit well, although it does not necessarily have to be washed if only worn once, and he recommends wearing cotton garments instead of synthetic materials.
Vaginal thrush is usually an occasional discomfort during summer, however, this is not always the case. “For patients who have thrush often, it is a good idea to take probiotics for preventive purposes, especially during the summer. However, probiotics must be taken under the supervision of a specialist”, points out Dr. Galvan.
“Being on vacation or not being able to go to the health center in person for any other reason, currently should not be an additional problem, since Hospiten centers offer a video call service so that patients can consult their concerns with a specialist. And prescriptions are sent to the patient by e-mail”, adds the doctor.
In this way, Hospiten makes patient care much easier and facilitates the search for a quick, effective solution. “In this case, it is a valid option for an infection that is generally quite uncomfortable. What is never advisable is self-medication”, adds Dr. Galvan.
