Bariatric surgery, key to obesity and mental health

Posted on 03-03-2022

Dr. Gianluca Cherubino of the Digestive Surgery Unit at Hospiten Sur states that the procedure is a good option for diseases associated with obesity and a variety of disorders related to mental health

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, March 2022. The General and Digestive Surgery Unit at Hospiten Sur University Hospital is committed to using bariatric surgery for patients suffering from obesity. It is one of the most effective options since many of the pathologies associated with obesity, which 17% of adults in Spain currently suffer from, can be dealt with effectively, according to official data.

The operation consists of performing a series of procedures laparoscopically, which entails less pain and fewer complications for the patient, and a much faster recovery. Specialists say that this type of treatment considerably improves the quality of life of obese patients.

Department head, Dr. Cherubino, explains that weight loss after surgery reduces the risk of death from cancer, heart disease or diabetes. He goes on to say that, with adequate follow-up, the benefits are also significant in terms of mental health conditions, like depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts.

The doctor points out that there is an evident relationship between obesity and mental health, since a person suffering from anxiety tends to have bad eating habits, like binge eating, irregular eating times and generally, bad eating habits. Likewise, the opposite may happen because a person with obesity can fall into depression due to lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem.

Although obesity causes a number of health problems, the most common associated pathologies are Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, gastroesophageal reflux, dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, osteoarticular problems and infertility. Obesity can also lead to the development of certain types of cancer, like colon, pancreas, endometrium, ovary, thyroid, kidney and liver tumors. Similarly, the prevalence of mental illness, like depression or suicidal thoughts, are common among patients who are candidates for the procedure.

For that reason, the General and Digestive Surgery Unit at Hospiten Sur insists on the importance of the patient being evaluated by a professional to determine whether any of these diseases are present. "We are concerned about the physical and mental health of our patients, which is why we offer a treatment that involves an evaluation of the patient and personalized post-surgical follow-up to achieve optimal results".
