Hospiten applies a minimally invasive breast reconstruction technique

Dr. Benjamin Gonzalez explains that it is the best option for women after breast lumpectomy surgery and radiotherapy

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, September 6, 2022. The Hospiten Group applies a minimally invasive breast reconstruction technique to restore the volume of the breast after breast cancer surgery (lumpectomy) with radiotherapy. The technique is known as lipofilling, or fat grafting and is indicated for women who have overcome a tumor and prefer not to have breast prostheses. This type of procedure is part of comprehensive breast cancer treatment and helps restore the shape and fullness of the breast to what it was prior to the diagnosis of the disease.

Dr. Benjamin Gonzalez, specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Esthetic Surgery at Hospiten Bellevue and Hospiten Sur University Hospitals, explains that one of the main advantages of this surgical technique is an improvement in skin quality. “The tissue used comes from the woman's own body, her own fat cells, in addition to stem cells and growth factors. This procedure gives a degree of elasticity and color that cannot be guaranteed with implants”.  He goes on to highlight the reduction in the emotional impact for sick people, since it helps them in the psychological recovery process.

Liposuction to obtain the fat for a lipofilling procedure is usually performed on the abdomen, and after filtering and washing, the fat can then be injected at the same time the diseased tissue is removed. The specialist adds that "this is another benefit for patients who have undergone radiotherapy." In addition, the rate of complications, postoperative pain and long hospital stays is reduced.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent tumor worldwide among women. The Hospiten specialist points out that this conservative technique allows small resections to be carried out without the need for aggressive interventions and the implantation of foreign bodies. Likewise, the new breast, in the long term, tends to behave esthetically like a healthy breast.

These types of technique restore the quality of life of patients and contribute to them recovering the life they had before their diagnosis. The technique has also gained great importance among surgical interventions as it has an ample margin for development. After radiotherapy, the skin and deep tissues often suffer burn-like damage and in these cases, successful placement of a breast expander is more difficult. For that reason, breast reconstruction with autologous tissue, the patient’s own tissue, has become the best alternative to recover the appearance and shape of the breast.
