Dr. Sara de Cabanyes emphasizes that the procedure involves minimum risk, and the post-surgical recovery period is short and almost pain free
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, March 7, 2023. The Hospiten Group adds to its portfolio of services with a new technique that uses 3D implants to alleviate the effects of pectus excavatum, a condition in which the breastbone is sunken into the chest, caused by the sternum and rib cage growing inward producing a caved-in, concave appearance.
Hospiten's thoracic surgeon, Sara de Cabanyes, explains that the implant technique consists of filling the deformity without touching the rib cage, unlike traditional orthopedic techniques. Each implant is designed to adapt to the patient's own anatomy, thus allowing a simple, painless procedure, with rapid recovery and immediate results.
It must be borne in mind that the condition is present in up to 1 in 300-400 births, and in women is accompanied by a deformity or asymmetry of the breasts. The impact of the condition is essentially esthetic and psychological, but very rarely functional.
Dr. de Cabanyes points out that the main reason for a medical consultation is physical appearance, the alteration of the structure of the chest wall and the way that affects the behavior of young people, especially during adolescence, when social interaction may suffer due to feeling self-conscious or different. There may be other symptoms like discomfort or occasional pain, as well as a loss of capacity to do exercise.
With the commissioning by Hospiten of this new technique, unique, personalized silicone implants are made with the aid of computer software. The process includes a chest scan, which allows the concave space in the chest to be filled out; the design of the implant which is manufactured using a mold.
The implants are fitted under general anesthesia in an intervention generally taking some 60 minutes, with minimum risk, and a short, almost pain free recovery whose results are immediate.
The Hospiten specialist highlights that once again Hospiten is putting technology at the service of medicine, in this case giving excellent morphological results regardless of gender, age or type of deformation.
