The agreement came about with the aim of joining forces to improve the well-being and quality of life of the Canary deaf community and their families. In addition, it seeks to favor the creation of an accessible, respectful environment regarding deaf culture and identity, removing communication barriers in the field of healthcare. With this goal, Hospiten Rambla University Hospital created the general medicine consultation in Spanish Sign Language (LSE), a pioneering project in Spain.
At the signing of the agreement, Pedro Luis Cobiella Beauvais, vice president and CEO of the Hospiten Group, stressed that “this is another step by our group in being more accessible and inclusive. We have seen how the deaf community comes up against certain barriers when receiving health care and at Hospiten, we want to help bring down these barriers, to provide more reliable, efficient diagnosis, treatment and monitoring, while respecting the patient’s right to privacy.”
"This is a project that also aims to stimulate and provide vocational opportunities for deaf people to study health and scientific careers," adds Mr. Cobiella.
For the president of Fasican, Kevin Perez, “this collaboration with Hospiten is a great advance towards a more equal society. It implies a commitment to accessibility, a value that both entities share, a value which is even more necessary, when talking about health care. Therefore, we celebrate this agreement, and will try to take the greatest advantage of the actions included in it”.
The lines of collaboration contemplated under the agreement include the adaption of a new workspace located in the Miramar neighborhood, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where Fasican will set up its headquarters. Health care by Hospiten for Fasican users in Spanish sign language, through free, monthly telematic consultations; education in health matters through talks set up for Fasican users on issues of interest like high blood pressure, diabetes, prevention of colon cancer and breast cancer, etc., organized by Spanish sign language doctor, Dr. Aleida Castro and the promotion of training for health professionals to improve communication with deaf people using the services provided by Hospiten.
