Santa Cruz de Tenerife, June 2022: The Hospiten Group has expanded its Neurosurgery service at Hospiten Lanzarote by incorporating a new Minimally Invasive and Endoscopic Spine Surgery Unit. Dr. Carlos Valencia, an expert in this type of surgery, joins the current team. The new extended service is intended to allow a more exhaustive follow-up of the different pathologies, and to provide more direct, rapid and efficient care.
The opening of this unit will allow patients with neurosurgical conditions to be operated on with minimally invasive surgery, which means procedures are less aggressive and therefore elderly people, cancer patients and those with previous illnesses and be treated, while minimizing the risks as much as possible. It is a treatment that is minimally invasive and requires only a small incision. The technique means that traditional surgery can be avoided, it is carried out using a microscope and the incision is usually between 5 and 7 cm long. So, recovery time and the hospital stay will be shorter, with less pain and discomfort, a lower risk of infection and scarring.
Conditions usually treated with minimally invasive and endoscopic surgery are cervical herniated disc, lumbar and cervical spinal stenosis, lumbar spondylolisthesis and synovial cysts. These endoscopic techniques entail a more comfortable postoperative period and lower surgical risk.
Specialist Dr. Carlos Valencia believes that patients who require this type of surgery can be treated at Hospiten Lanzarote and will not have to travel to hospitals on other islands. “We are working to guarantee a more complete service, which coordinates with other departments. So, we will be collaborating with the Traumatology Service and Rehabilitation to ensure multidisciplinary care for patients”.
Consultations will be made in person at Hospiten Lanzarote or by video call. The protection of patients’ information is guaranteed through the platform, since it is integrated into the Hospiten appointment process, guaranteeing secure communication between professionals and patients, complying with the highest level of protection.
