Hospiten incorporates, for the first time in the Canary Islands, the use of stem cells to treat lesions to the locomotor system

European experts have trained and assessed medical staff at Hospiten Rambla to apply the treatment, which will allow healthy tissue to be regenerated with excellent results expected.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, September 23 2015: The Hospiten Group extends its offer of services in Tenerife with the installation of a new unit in Hospiten Rambla to treat a variety of lesions with stem cells.

The technique, pioneering in Spain, will enable a team led by the Head of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at Hospiten Rambla, Dr. Manuel Baro, and consisting of different specialists, to regenerate and reconstruct healthy tissue from regenerative cells taken from fat extracted from the patient’s own body.

To implement the technique, experts from Barcelona and Scotland have trained and assessed medical staff at the hospital in recent weeks in the application of this innovative, minimally invasive treatment giving very positive results.

The new unit, in addition to orthopedic surgery, will be used by any of the specialties that need to regenerate tissue, such as in rheumatology, urology or the field of plastic surgery, with many options in breast reconstruction, burns, etc.

“In my specialty, which is orthopedic surgery and traumatology, we will be able to slow down diseases like osteoarthritis and delay or even avoid the need for joint replacement. It is also expected to be used to treat muscle injuries, repair tendons, ligaments, cartilage or, for instance, to attend patients with foot infections due to diabetes – another common pathology in this Autonomous Region”, explains Dr. Baro.

The Hospiten Rambla medical team, led by Dr. Baro and Dr. Sanchez Peraza, of the Plastic, Reconstructive and Esthetic Surgery service, carried out the first intervention using the technique last week on a very active 58-year-old woman, who presented symptoms of pre-osteoarthritis, using stem cells in the affected area to regenerate the deteriorated cartilage.

“Stem cells differ from other cells in the organism in that they can divide and form new cells. Their function is essential to our health because when we are injured or ill, many cells are damaged or die in the process. It is then that the body’s stem cells immediately go into action to repair damaged tissue and replace dead cells”, adds Dr. Baro.

The incorporation of specialist equipment for the extraction of regenerative cells from fat and its use in injured patients makes Hospiten Rambla the only hospital in the Canary Islands to use the technique, thus consolidating the company’s endorsement of innovation and science to improve patients’ health and quality of life.
