Gran Canaria, June 9, 2026. Dr. Marcello Casuscelli, a urologist at Hospiten Roca, explains that PSA—Prostate-Specific Antigen—is a protein produced by the prostate gland, and measuring its concentration in the blood allows for the early detection of changes in prostate health. Although its biological function is to liquefy semen to facilitate sperm motility, in medicine it is used as a fundamental tool in prostate cancer screening.

Thespecialist emphasizes that an elevated PSA level does not necessarily mean cancer, as it can rise due to benign hyperplasia, inflammation, infection, prostate manipulation, or even recent medical procedures. “PSA is not a diagnosis; it is a sign. It always requires a clinical evaluation by a urologist,” he clarifies.
The PSA test can produce false positives—high levels without the presence of cancer—or false negatives, when values are normal despite the presence of a tumor. For this reason, Dr. Casuscelli stresses the importance of interpreting the PSA within a comprehensive clinical context, taking into account symptoms, a digital rectal exam, urinalysis, and, when necessary, imaging studies such as multiparametric MRI or targeted biopsy.
As for who should undergo the test, the specialist notes that the recommendation depends on age and individual risk:
- Men aged 50 to 69: It is advisable to consider the test after an informed discussion with a doctor.
- Men with a family history of prostate cancer or of African descent: screening is recommended starting at age 45.
- Men with BRCA2 mutations: screening may begin at age 40.
Dr. Casuscelli also notes that international studies indicate that PSA screening can reduce prostate cancer mortality by approximately 13%, while always weighing the risks of overdiagnosis and overtreatment.
Current advances in this field are enabling more accurate detection: combining PSA with MRI, more specific biomarkers, and predictive models based on artificial intelligence.
Hospiten Roca reinforces its commitment to men’s health by promoting early diagnosis, personalized follow-up, and treatment tailored to each patient. If you experience any urinary symptoms or have concerns about your prostate health, they recommend consulting a specialist.
