Overview
Thoracic Surgery is responsible for the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases affecting the lungs, pleura, mediastinum, chest wall, and trachea. It excludes the heart, which falls under cardiovascular surgery, but works closely with pulmonology and thoracic oncology.
Common Conditions Treated
- Lung cancer and pulmonary metastases
- Spontaneous or secondary pneumothorax
- Mediastinal tumors and bronchogenic cysts
- Pleural infections (empyema, chronic effusion)
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Tracheal disease and tracheal stenosis
- Chest wall deformities (pectus excavatum, carinatum)
- Thoracic trauma (rib fractures, pulmonary contusion)
What to Expect During Your Visit
In the initial consultation, the thoracic surgeon will review imaging studies (CT scan, bronchoscopy, etc.), respiratory symptoms, and the patient’s general condition. If surgery is needed, the objectives, steps, and postoperative process will be clearly explained.
