Hospiten Roca incorporates laser surgery to correct vision problems

Posted on 30-08-2022

Las Palmas, August 23, 2022. Hospiten Roca offers its patients a new service to correct vision problems with laser surgery, thanks to the acquisition of the Alcon Wavelight® Refractive Suite system which integrates excimer laser and femtosecond technology.

The new service responds to a high demand for this type of procedure today. According to ophthalmologist Carlos de Astica Cranz, "incorporating this system means being able to offer all the surgical options in ophthalmology to correct the different types of vision loss like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia". It will also make it easier for the many patients who live outside Las Palmas de Gran Canaria who now do not have to travel to the city.

The new Alcon WaveLight® EX500 system uses topography-guided technology to allow the surgeon to be able to create a map of the patient's cornea, analyzing its unique anatomical features for a more precise, fully customized procedure.

These types of laser procedures are ambulatory, they take about 5-10 minutes and have an extraordinarily low rate of complications. We must also add that when using the femtosecond laser, we do not need to use any type of blade or microkeratome.

As Dr. Astica says, “patients report being very happy, not only because they no longer have to rely on their glasses, but also because their self-esteem is improved, allowing them to swim without the risks of wearing contact lens and they do not have to put up with their glasses fogging up when using masks”.

For what type of patient is this surgery used?

There is not a specific patient profile for this technique. It is usually requested by people who spend a lot of time on the computer, who are very active, are members of law enforcement or security forces, work with the public or who want to improve their image.

Another question about this type of surgery is usually about the recovery process. In the case of laser refractive surgery, good vision is usually achieved within 1-7 days, and most patients can retake their usual activities 15 days after the procedure. In more specific cases involving people with very physical jobs or whose activities include going to the beach or swimming, it will take about 1 month.
