Overview
Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty within the field of diagnostic imaging that uses very small amounts of radioactive substances—radiopharmaceuticals—to obtain diagnostic images, known as scans.
It also includes therapeutic procedures using radioactive isotopes. Nuclear Medicine offers various diagnostic procedures to assess the condition and function of several organs and systems.
It also includes some therapeutic procedures, the best known being radioactive iodine therapy for thyroid disorders—a highly effective and minimally invasive treatment used since the mid-20th century.
Common Conditions Treated
- Bone disease diagnosis (metastases, occult lesions, hidden fractures)
- Myocardial perfusion study (heart)
- Kidney and glomerular function evaluation
- Tumor detection and cancer recurrence
- Thyroid and parathyroid study (hyperthyroidism, cold or hot nodules)
- Treatment of hyperthyroidism or thyroid cancer with I-131
What to Expect During Your Visit
Unlike conventional radiology, the images are not generated by external emission from the device. Instead, the radiopharmaceutical is introduced into the body, and the radiation is captured externally by a gamma camera.
