Santa Cruz de Tenerife, October 2019:- The effects of radiotherapy, chemotherapy or hormone therapy on the genital area can be severe and almost always affect the sexual health and quality of life of the woman. According to the head gynecologist at the Cosmetic Gynecology and Intimate Surgery Unit at Hospiten Bellevue, Ioana Bodea, almost all the symptoms of early menopause caused by cancer treatments can be treated or prevented with the use of vaginal laser.

With the increase in survival rates in cancer, there has also been a rise in the number of consultations about the side effects of cancer treatments, many of which seriously affect the quality of life of patients. For instance, gynecologic side effects are among the most common in women who have had breast, ovarian, cervical or endometrial cancer, due to hormone therapies used in most cases to treat these diseases.

The most common effects of cancer treatment and which can be treated with vaginal laser are long-term dryness, atrophy, chronic pain during sexual intercourse, tightness or thinning of the vaginal walls or the vulva, among others. “It’s important that cancer patients know there ways to recover their genital and sexual health. At present, the rates of effectiveness of the treatment are between 85% to 100% and it has been shown to improve a woman’s quality of life and help recover a normal sex life”, explains the doctor.

The most common symptoms and problems caused by cancer treatments affecting the genital area are: vaginal atrophy, dryness, pain and/or bleeding during intercourse, chronic inflammation, irregular bleeding, repeated infections due to low defenses, thinning of the vaginal walls and labia, tightness, changes in the degree of sensitivity and loss of sensation during sex and difficulty reaching an orgasm, changes in libido due to fatigue, tiredness, low self-esteem due to hair loss or changes in body weight, as well as early aging of the genital area, among others.

A safe, straightforward and painless procedure

“The safety of laser treatment in women who have suffered cancer has already been demonstrated with clinical studies, likewise, it can be guaranteed that it has no side effects, has no contraindications and replaces the use of estrogens in patients who are recommended not to use it. In addition, the procedures are simple, quick and very effective outpatient treatments. In fact, laser manufacturers have now made progress in adapting the treatment specifically for cancer patients by reducing the intensity and the pulse of light to meet their special needs and by introducing a new design for hand-held accessories that can be used easily and painlessly”, adds the Hospiten specialist.

Laser therapy stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, which results in tissue rejuvenation and recovery of normal vaginal function, so the specialists at the Cosmetic Gynecology and Intimate Surgery Unit recommend its use for its many benefits and positive effects in the treatment different dysfunctions.
