Dr. Luis Chiva, Member of the American Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) Scientific Committee

Dr. Luis Chiva, Head of the Gynecologic Oncology Service at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid, has been named a new member of the American Society Of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) Scientific Committee. Dr. Chiva is the only Spanish member belonging to the renowned committee of experts made up of 23 international specialists in Gynecologic Oncology

Doctor of Medicine and specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics, Dr. Chiva trained in the field of gynecologic cancer in Chicago. For the last twenty years, he has dedicated his life to treating tumors in women.

He is, at present, the Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Department at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid. He is a professor at the University of Texas and is President of the Teaching Committee of its institution. Editor of the journal “Ginecología Oncológica”: un enfoque multidisciplinar” (Gynecologic Oncology: a multidisciplinary approach) and reviewer for several gynecologic oncology journals. He has had over 100 papers on the specialty and 11 book chapters published and has been guest speaker on more than 150 occasions. He has organized many congresses, symposiums and meeting on gynecologic oncology.

Over recent years, and for personal reasons, he has had the chance to study in depth the patient-centered concept of medicine, trying to understand and get across to his colleagues what exactly patients expect of their doctors. He was the founder of Gynecologists for the Right to Live.

The main aim of the SGO is to promote the highest possible quality in integral clinical care through education and investigation aimed at the prevention and treatment of gynecologic cancers to ultimately eradicate this type of cancer. Furthermore, among its most recent initiatives, the SGO is trying to create and implement a global plan through which it would be active in developing international policies on education, prevention and treatment of gynecologic cancer.
