Pedro Luis Cobiella Suarez (born in La Orotava, Tenerife, December 29, 1936) is the honorary chairman of the Hospiten Group, a private hospital network of international character with 20 medical-hospital centers located in Spain, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jamaica and Panama
Academic biography
Pedro Luis Cobiella Suarez graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1959, achieving the specialty of Gynecology and Obstetrics five years later, in 1964. At the same time, Dr. Cobiella obtained a Diploma in Business Medicine in 1963 and passed a competitive examination for state obstetricians in 1964. Currently, Dr. Pedro Luis Cobiella Suarez honorary presides the Hospiten Group and is president of MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid.
Dr. Cobiella Suarez has combined his work as president of the Group, with that of promoter of the Hotel Buenavista Club, member of the Executive Committee of the Confederation of Businessmen of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Tourism Excellence ( EXCELTUR), member of the Círculo de Empresarios at a national level, member and patron of the Association for the Progress of Management, member of the Regional Advisory Council of BBVA, and honorary president of the Institute for the Development and Integration of Health (IDIS) .
Internationalization process of the Hospiten Group
Dr. Cobiella Suarez is key in the evolution of the Hospiten Group because he was behind the desire to export the idea of a link between tourism and healthcare that resulted in the inauguration of the first of the group’s hospitals outside the Canary Islands. In the year 2000, Hospiten opened its first center in the Dominican Republic - Hospiten Bavaro. In 2003, Hospiten Cancun became the first center in Mexico and, in 2015 the group expanded its internationalization process to Jamaica. Currently, the Hospiten Group has divided its business, with ten centers in Spain and ten centers spread over four countries - two in the Dominican Republic, five in Mexico, two in Jamaica and one in Panama.
Other positions held
The founder of the Hospiten Group has also been the first president of the Institute for the Development and Integration of Health (IDIS), a foundation whose objective is the enhancement of private healthcare, and a member of the Tourism Board of Tenerife until 2011. In addition, from 1996 to 2005, Dr. Cobiella presided over the Hotelier and Extra Hotelier Association of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro (Ashotel) and, from 1996 to 2004, the Social Council of the University of La Laguna.
